Salzburg’s Panorama Tours: the hills are alive with the Sound of Music

The Sound of Music is one of my favourite films of all time. (I’m not afraid to admit it, by the way). And since I was already in Europe, I thought why not take a trip down to Austria? I can’t honestly say that Austria’s been particularly high on my list of places to visit, but I came here for one reason and one reason alone – I just wanted to go someplace I hadn’t been before, and I wanted to do it on my own.

So here I am. It was a last minute decision.

Austria surprised me from the moment I landed. Everything is clean, efficient and so far most of the people I’ve encountered speak English. Makes for an easy travel experience for someone who’s travelling alone.

Despite the Sound of Music’s immense popularity worldwide, the film is relatively unknown and unpopular in Austria. A journalist I met told me that it’s because it portrays Austria and Austrians in a stereotypical and unrealistic light. But then again, what more can you expect from a Hollywood production?

Hmm… about that…

Anyways, I can’t say that the reality of seeing Salzburg in real life quite took away from the magic of the film. After all, the two are two very separate things…

It’s a 2.5 hour train ride from Vienna to Salzburg. The are Westbahn (blue) and OBB (red) trains run every half an hour from the Central Station. The Westbahn train was perfectly comfortable and considerably cheaper.

Hmm… about that…

I booked a tour with Panorama Tours and it did not disappoint. Our tour guide was a relatively cheerful British lad that went by the name of David. Those of you who are familiar with British humour will know what I mean when I describe an English gentleman as cheerful. Ahem… Ahem… And the driver Haki was fun, too.

The Abbey
The ‘House’ – kind of, maybe, sort of.

I am 16 going on 17.

Wedding Bells?

I can’t say the hills were particularly alive with the Sound of Music, but what I will say is that Salzburg is an incredibly beautiful, picturesque and postcard-perfect city that no one should ever give a miss.

Till next time, adieu 🙂
